Army Worms Destroy 1,155 Acres of Farmland in Techiman Municipality

Fall Army Worms have invaded 1,155 acres of farmland across 61 communities in the Techiman Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region, leaving some farmers unable to take action.
Mr. Maamah James Wikire, Acting Municipal Director for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), revealed that farmers first reported the pests in early April and were advised to spray their crops. MOFA is working with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), led by Coordinator Mr. Jibril Larbi Kesse, to assess and compile data on affected farms.
“The caterpillars primarily feed on young maize plants, damaging leaves and leaving moist, sawdust-like frass near the funnel and upper leaves,” Mr. Wikire explained. He added that Fall Army Worms are most active in the mornings and evenings but may also feed inside maize plants during the day, and can also attack crops such as cashew, cocoa, and beans.
To control the pests, Mr. Wikire recommended using insecticides like Supertop and Confidol. His office is collaborating with NADMO to register affected farmers and determine how the government can provide support to help control the infestation.
