Adjei-Mensah Korsah Inaugurates Modern Market Facilities in Techiman South and Nkoranza South to Boost Local Economies

Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, has officially opened modern market facilities in both Techiman South and Nkoranza South Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies. These projects are part of the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP), funded by a $245 million loan from the World Bank, aimed at boosting local economies and providing essential services for market users. The newly completed Nana Abena Market in Techiman is equipped with a range of facilities to serve both vendors and the wider community. Notable features of the market include 122 lockable stores and 68 market stalls to cater to various commercial activities.

The market also includes key service structures such as an administration block, a crèche, a restaurant, and a designated meat shop. Critical safety and health infrastructure has been added, with a new fire station, police post, and health post. In terms of sanitation, the market has modern washrooms and an advanced drainage system, consisting of 300 meters of 0.9-meter U-drain, 710 meters of 0.6-meter U-drain, and 900 meters of internal drainage. Further improvements include a 100-meter road junction upgrade, 1,900 square meters of paved walkways, a perimeter fence for security, and 28 streetlights to enhance safety and accessibility.

In Nkoranza, the market development includes a two-story building with 50 lockable stores and 100 market stalls designed to expand local commerce. Other key facilities are a police post, a health post, a 6-seater WC facility, and two mechanized boreholes for a consistent water supply. The market also features a two-unit crèche with an office to support families.

During the inauguration, Mr. Korsah highlighted the transformative nature of these facilities, which reflect the government’s commitment to creating vibrant, resilient communities. He emphasized that by modernizing markets and improving infrastructure, the government is laying the foundation for sustainable growth and supporting local livelihoods.

He also urged municipal authorities to maintain the facilities and ensure they continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve. The projects demonstrate the Ministry’s dedication to sustainable urban development in collaboration with the World Bank and local stakeholders, enhancing the economic resilience of Ghana’s secondary cities.
