Techiman NDC sympathizes with NPP supporter over acid case

Mr. Kwadwo Adjei, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced concerns over the lack of arrests in connection with the incident in which a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was attacked with acid in Techiman.
The attack took place during the 2012 election campaign, when unknown individuals allegedly poured acid on Peter Mensah, a former communications team member of the NPP in the Techiman North constituency. As a result of the attack, Mensah had to be flown abroad for plastic surgery. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Adjei expressed his shock and disappointment that the Techiman Municipal Police had not pursued the case further. He was particularly concerned that the police had not yet questioned Kwasi Attipoe, a former NDC executive member in Techiman North, who had publicly stated on local FM stations that he knew the individuals responsible for the acid attack.
He emphasized that “the law must be allowed to operate without political bias” and urged the Inspector General of Police to intervene so that investigations could be reopened. Mr. Adjei argued that bringing the suspects to justice would serve as a deterrent to others who might consider similar violent actions.
Mr. Adjei also called on the leadership of the NDC to allow the law to take its course without interference, stressing that “violent and indiscipline NDC supporters whose activities bring the Party into reproach and disrepute must not be entertained.” He warned that failing to expose and hold accountable those who commit such crimes would harm the NDC’s reputation, stating, “We should not allow people to hide under the NDC, commit heinous crimes, and go free.”
In addition to his concerns about the acid attack case, Mr. Adjei expressed worry about divisions within the NDC ranks in the Techiman North and Techiman South constituencies, which he believed was negatively affecting party unity. He also noted that the ongoing conflict between the two NDC Members of Parliament (MPs) in the area and the Techiman Municipal Chief Executive had not been addressed, which could undermine the party’s prospects in the 2016 elections.
Mr. Adjei called on the national leadership of the NDC to step in and resolve the tensions between the three key party figures in Techiman, emphasizing the need for early resolution to safeguard the party’s success in the upcoming elections.
In response, Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Ankrah, the Techiman Municipal Police Commander, stated that the police had indeed invited Attipoe for questioning, but he failed to appear. The case has now been transferred to the Regional Police Command for further investigation.
