Indonesia earthquake and tsunami leave millions affected

A powerful 7.4 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s coast on September 28, triggering a tsunami that affected about 1.5 million people on Sulawesi island.
More than 2,000 people have been confirmed dead and around 212,000 have been forced from their homes. Over 1,200 schools – from preschool to high school – were damaged, affecting nearly 184,000 students and almost 13,000 teachers.
In Palu, the hardest-hit city, more than half the residents were displaced. Phone service is still unreliable, and reaching damaged areas has been difficult because of debris. Remote communities remain cut off by destroyed roads, landslides, and poor communication. For tens of thousands of children, the situation remains very dangerous.
