Notre-Dame Saved After Inferno Sparks Global Reaction

French fire officials say Notre-Dame Cathedral has been saved from complete destruction after a massive fire tore through the historic landmark.
The blaze began on Monday evening in the 12th-century cathedral, quickly destroying the spire and much of the roof, and sending thick smoke across Paris. One firefighter was seriously injured, and local reports indicate police believe the fire was accidental.
President Emmanuel Macron said he was deeply saddened to see part of a symbol shared by everyone burn. Speaking at the scene, he expressed sympathy for Catholics worldwide and said the worst outcome had been avoided. He announced plans for an international fundraising drive to help rebuild the cathedral.
Earlier, the interior minister warned that the 400 firefighters might not be able to save the structure, but officials later said they were more hopeful. Fire authorities confirmed that the main structure and both towers survived.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May also shared her support, saying her thoughts were with France and the emergency crews battling the fire.
