Techiman Main Market to Temporarily Close due to COVID-19

Authorities at the Techiman Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region have announced the temporary closure of the Techiman Main Market to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The closure will begin on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Techiman’s Municipal Chief Executive, John Donyina, explained that alternative arrangements have been made, including the use of school parks and open spaces around the town as satellite markets. These markets will operate on a shift system to maintain social distancing measures.

The closure is part of broader efforts by the assembly to reduce the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak, as many traders from across the country visit the market weekly. Donyina emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable groups within the municipality, noting that the decision was made after consultations with the Techiman Security Council, the Traditional Council, and other stakeholders.

This move follows a warning from the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, about potential market closures in areas where vendors fail to comply with social distancing guidelines. Similar actions have been taken across the country, including temporary closures and market relocations to ensure safety and enforce social distancing measures.
