Techiman Upgraded to Metropolitan Status: A Milestone for Bono East’s Development

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially upgraded Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region, from a Municipal Assembly to a Metropolitan status in line with The Local Governance Act (936).

In a statement released from the Jubilee House in Accra, the President referenced a letter dated October 22, 2024, from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, which granted executive approval for the elevation of three Municipal Assemblies—Techiman, Kpone-Katamanso, and Gomoa-East—to Metropolitan status.

This decision aims to acknowledge Techiman’s rapid growth and development, providing the city with enhanced resources and support to sustain its progress. The upgrade will ensure the town receives increased funding for infrastructure, social services, and economic development. Furthermore, Techiman will gain access to more opportunities for investment, which will benefit its residents and foster further growth in the region.

In an interview on Radio Link’s “Agoo AM” Show on November 7, 2024, hosted by Omanpanin Papa Kwame Atoapem, the Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Hon. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, who also serves as the Local Government Minister, shared that the President had also approved the upgrade of 12 districts to Municipalities. These districts include Bole, Afigya-Kwabre South, Atwima Kwanwoma, Atwima Nwabiagya North, Obuasi East, Sekyere South, Ningo-Prampram, Anloga, South Tongu, Shama, Techiman North, and Pru East.

Hon. Korsah emphasized the importance of these upgrades, particularly Techiman’s transition to Metropolitan status, stating that this elevation places Techiman on par with major cities like Accra and Kumasi. As a result, both Techiman and the Bono East Region are set to receive focused government attention and investment in areas such as public universities, education infrastructure, and road development.

The elevation of Techiman to Metropolitan status marks a significant achievement for the city, underscoring its progress and potential. It also highlights the government’s dedication to supporting urban growth across Ghana, ensuring that all regions have the necessary resources to thrive.
