Government to Build New Technical Universities in Jasikan and Techiman

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the government plans to establish new technical universities as part of a broader effort to expand access to tertiary education nationwide.

Speaking at a media briefing on the 2026 education budget, the Minister explained that the original proposal included building technical universities in Jasikan in the Oti Region, Techiman in the Bono East Region, and Damango in the Savannah Region.

He, however, clarified that Damango will instead receive a University of Science and Technology, while the technical universities will now be situated in Jasikan and Techiman.

“We intended to set up technical universities in Jasikan, Techiman, and Damango. But since Damango is now getting a University of Science and Technology, I’ll need to consult with the President before finalising the decision,” he noted during the session at the GTEC office in Accra.

“With Damango being allocated the Science and Technology university, the plan is to proceed with technical universities in Jasikan and Techiman while still giving Damango its Science and Technology institution,” he added.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that this initiative supports President John Mahama’s vision of bringing tertiary education closer to underserved areas, strengthening technical education, and equipping young people with the practical skills needed for national development.

“The President’s goal is for every region to have its own specialized higher education institution,” he stated.
