Samini Explains Offbeat Performance at 29th GJA Awards, Cites Technical Issues

After reactions to his performance at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, Dancehall artist Samini has clarified what happened during his set.

Some audience members criticized him for performing offbeat, prompting Samini to explain the situation. In an interview on Hitz FM on November 12, 2025, he revealed that he was not originally scheduled to perform at the event.

Samini shared that he had been out of town and returned just two days before the awards ceremony. His friend Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, president of the GJA, invited him to step in and perform, which is why he ended up on stage.

“I wasn’t initially billed to perform. A friend who is the president of the GJA asked me to help out when I returned just two days before the event,” he explained.

During his performance, some audience members complained about the sound quality, which Samini attributed to technical issues with the onstage monitors. He noted that such glitches are common in live performances and should be expected by those familiar with the industry.

“For live performances, glitches are inevitable. There’s a lot going on at once, and my monitors were off. Every live performer would understand what that means,” he added.

The 29th GJA Awards, which took place on November 8, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace, was the first time the event had been held outside Accra. The ceremony, held under the patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, celebrated media excellence in Ghana. Notable attendees included President John Dramani Mahama, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and Alex Apau Dadey, Executive Chairman of KGL Group.
