Omanhene of Techiman Elected to Represent Bono East on Council of State

Oseadeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, the Omanhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, has been elected to represent the Bono East Region on the Council of State. The election took place in Techiman on Saturday, February 20, 2021, where Oseadeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV secured a unanimous victory, receiving all 22 votes. He triumphed over his sole opponent, Agyapong Adu-Baah, also known as Dr. Patapaa.

Before the election, eight other candidates, including the Abeasehene, Yejimanhene, and Fred Zeini, a businessman and Twafohene of the Techiman Traditional Council, withdrew their candidacies.

The election had initially been scheduled for February 12, 2021, but was postponed after assemblyman Kennedy Afolabi filed a suit at the Sunyani High Court to block the Electoral Commission (EC) from proceeding with the exercise. Afolabi argued that the election could not be held without his participation, as his name had been submitted by the Atebubu-Amanten Municipal Assembly to be part of the electoral college. He contested the substitution of his name with that of the acting Municipal Chief Executive for Atebubu-Amanten, claiming it was unlawful.

Afolabi was one of three assembly members who had filed the suit to stop the election. The other two were Issah Mubarack and Paul Adu Frimpong from the Kintampo Municipal Assembly. However, before the court hearing, Mubarack and Frimpong withdrew their applications. The court, presided over by Mr. Patrick Baaye, dismissed Afolabi’s case and imposed a GH¢3,000 cost on him, ruling that the EC was not responsible for the substitution of his name in the electoral process.

In his victory speech, Oseadeyo Ameyaw IV emphasized the importance of consensus building for the development of the new region. He also highlighted the need to mentor young people, encouraging them to prepare for future leadership roles in the region.

The acting Bono East Regional Minister, Mr. Kofi Amoakohene, congratulated Oseadeyo Ameyaw IV on his win and urged the people of the region to offer their support to ensure his success as their representative on the Council of State.
