People are afraid of the talents LGBTQ individuals have – Sister Derby

Ghanaian musician and LGBTQ rights advocate Sister Derby has again addressed the strong opposition to the LGBTQ community in Ghana, attributing much of the hostility to a fear of the unique talents and qualities of queer people.

In an interview with MX24 TV, Sister Derby explained, “Since the beginning of time, people have been afraid of the creativity and intelligence that queer people have because they are a blend of both worlds.”

She also dismissed the claims of a “gay agenda” in schools, arguing that there’s no evidence to support the idea that LGBTQ individuals are influencing children. “No child has ever reported being made gay or lesbian. There’s no credible evidence, no reports in the news or from parents,” she added.

Sister Derby pointed out that queer people have always been part of Ghanaian society, mentioning popular queer personalities on platforms like TikTok. “We’ve always known queer people in our communities, and we love their creativity and talent,” she said.

She also suggested that those opposing LGBTQ rights may have hidden personal or political motives, urging the public to critically examine their true intentions.

Her comments come as the debate over LGBTQ rights intensifies, especially with the review of the anti-LGBTQ bill passed by Parliament in February 2024, which has sparked concerns about human rights violations. The bill is currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
