Major Expansion Planned for Techiman Central Market Under 24-Hour Economy Programme

Bono East Regional Minister, Mr. Francis Owusu Antwi, has announced that the Techiman Central Market will soon undergo extensive expansion and rehabilitation as part of the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
He noted that the upgrade will enhance commercial activities, stimulate economic growth, and generate more jobs for residents.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during his visit to the market, Mr. Antwi highlighted that Techiman attracts traders from neighbouring countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Ivory Coast.
Describing it as one of Ghana’s most vibrant markets, he said modernising the facility would draw additional investment and strengthen the local economy. Planned upgrades include improved access roads, lorry terminals, washrooms, and other modern market structures to boost revenue.
Mr. Antwi also disclosed that preparations are well underway for reconstruction works on the Techiman–Sunyani highway, calling it a vital transit route for goods and services.
He further revealed that the government is working with traditional authorities to secure land for a regional airport to support tourism growth. Additionally, a contract has been awarded for the construction of a ring road to ease the movement of heavy-duty trucks under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, with works expected to start soon.
In the education sector, he announced that a two-storey classroom block and a 2,000-seater dining hall will be built for Krobo Senior High School.
Meanwhile, Nana Owusu Gyare II, Akwamuhene and Acting President of the Techiman Traditional Council, urged the government to upgrade inner-city roads in Techiman. He also called for the swift commencement of the ring road project to address persistent traffic congestion caused by heavy trucks in the central business area.
