Kwaw Kese Renewes Call for Marijuana Legalisation in Ghana

Hiplife musician Kwaw Kese is calling for the legalization of marijuana in Ghana, claiming that “80%” of the population already uses the banned substance.

The artiste, known as ‘Abodam’, was jailed two months ago and fined GH¢1,200 by a Kumasi High Court after being convicted for smoking cannabis at a popular bar in Kumasi.

Kwaw Kese, also referred to as ‘The Man Insane’, spent more than a month on remand at the Kumasi Central Prisons for the offence. His imprisonment took a toll on his health, leading to a brief stay at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to a stomach ailment.

In a Facebook post on Monday, June 8, he argued that his arrest was unjust, insisting he was merely enjoying his “preferred choice of smoke.” He criticized authorities for permitting the sale of cigarettes, which he considers equally “toxic and dangerous.”

He has since launched a social media campaign that is expected to reignite national discussions on the legalization of marijuana in Ghana.
