Akuapem Poloo Sentenced to 90 Days in Prison, Will Miss Son’s 8th Birthday

Actress Rosemond Brown, widely known as Akuapem Poloo, will miss her son’s 8th birthday as she is set to spend several months in prison.
On Friday, April 16, 2021, an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Christina Caan, sentenced the actress to 90 days in jail for posting a nude photo of herself and her son in 2020.
The controversial photo, shared on June 30, 2020, depicted Akuapem Poloo naked and squatting in front of her son as part of his seventh birthday celebration. The image sparked public outcry, prompting the non-governmental organization, Child Rights International, to take legal action against her for publishing obscene material.
Akuapem Poloo faced three charges: publication of obscene materials, actions that violated another person’s privacy and integrity, and engaging in conduct that undermined the dignity and worth of another person. She pleaded guilty to all charges and was convicted based on her plea.
As a result, the actress will be absent for her son’s birthday, but her lawyer, Andy Vortia, has appealed the decision. If the appeal is successful, she may be released sooner.
Ahead of the sentencing, a social media campaign called #FreeAkuapemPoloo was launched by her family and friends, urging the judge to show leniency.
