George Quaye Dismisses Ghana-Nollywood Comparisons, Highlights Strengths of Ghana’s Film Industry

Prominent playwright and media figure George Quaye has dismissed comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood.

During a discussion on United Showbiz on July 21, Quaye acknowledged Nigeria’s success in film, attributing it to their drive and larger numbers.

“Nigeria has a more aggressive approach and a much larger market. Their numbers are bigger, and naturally, they’ll have a greater demand than Ghana. We can’t match them in terms of size or demand,” he said.

However, he pointed out a positive aspect for Ghanaian actors, noting that Nigerian filmmakers continue to cast them in their movies.

“Nigerians still hire Ghanaian actors. It’s not that they don’t have enough talent; it shows that we possess something they don’t,” he added.

Quaye emphasized that Ghana’s film industry should be valued for its unique contributions, urging creatives to stop comparing it to Nollywood. “Let’s stop comparing ourselves to Nigerians… the Ghanaian film industry is not a waste of time,” he said.

While recognizing that Ghana cannot match Nigeria in terms of scale or market, Quaye stressed that talent and quality could give Ghana an edge. He encouraged Ghanaian actors to embrace their strengths and tailor their approach to the local market.

“It’s up to actors to evaluate themselves, their market, and what works for them. I started as an actor, but some have evolved into hosts and influencers,” he said.
