Death Toll Rises to Eight in Fatal Kumasi-Techiman Highway Crash

The death toll from a tragic accident that took place at Nkenkensu on the Kumasi-Techiman highway has risen to eight, according to Asaase News.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning around 4 a.m. when a cargo vehicle carrying frozen fish, with the registration number GE-5097-23, lost control and collided head-on with a Yuntong bus. The bus was en route from Yendi to Kumasi at the time of the crash.

Francis Awuah, an assemblyman for the Offinso North District, confirmed that eight fatalities had been reported by the district hospital. The victims included three women and five men, with one individual being trapped during the collision. “The bodies have been taken to the morgue, and the surviving passengers are currently receiving medical care,” he stated.

He noted that the accident occurred in a curved section of the road with deep potholes. According to Awuah, heavy vehicles often break down in this area, and it takes a considerable amount of time for them to be cleared, exacerbating the safety risks on that stretch of highway.

The road has since been cleared for traffic, and the police are investigating the cause of the crash. This incident marks the third road accident in the district within the past three weeks, with previous accidents involving tricycles.

A disaster management coordinator in the Offinso North District, speaking with Asaase News, called for a nationwide review of the protocols surrounding the use of non-traditional transportation systems in the country.
