Techiman North Records Zero Maternal Deaths Through Effective Health Strategies

The Techiman North District in the Brong Ahafo Region recorded zero maternal deaths from 2017 to mid-2018, thanks to effective strategies and interventions implemented by the District Assembly and the District Health Management Team (DHMT).

District Chief Executive Peter Mensah highlighted this achievement during a Town Hall Meeting in Tuobodom, where government policies and programs were explained to residents. He noted that new health facilities are being constructed to meet the community’s needs, including two CHPS compounds at Krobo and Nyansuaka funded by the DACF, with 40% of construction completed.

District Health Director Stephen Nyarko-Ameyaw reported that in 2017, 799 supervised deliveries were conducted with no maternal deaths. Similarly, between January and June 2018, no maternal deaths were recorded.

The DHMT credited this success to strict supervision, effective health education, and an early referral system. Other measures include providing pregnant women with anti-malaria drugs, tetanus vaccinations, dietary guidance, and iron supplements to improve hemoglobin levels.

The District Health Directorate aims to advance the UNFPA vision of “every childbirth is safe” through comprehensive antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. The Health Director encouraged pregnant women to regularly visit health facilities and urged relatives to ensure expectant mothers receive proper medical attention.

The Town Hall Meeting was organized by the Ministry of Information (MOI) and the Information Services Department (ISD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

Regional Information Officer Imoro Ayibani Tebra explained that Town Hall Meetings are a key tool for promoting participatory democracy, good governance, and transparency. He emphasized that stakeholder consultation, collective decision-making, and accountability are central to decentralization, and urged residents to engage in discussions free from political or chieftaincy conflicts.
