Tensions Escalate in NDC Techiman South as Violence Erupts Over Internal Conflicts

There is currently unrest within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Techiman South Constituency of the Bono East Region, following a series of internal conflicts.
The tensions have escalated, particularly after disputes stemming from recent internal elections. As a result, an 80-year-old man and two others were reportedly assaulted by alleged supporters of the Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Nuhu Fawa, amid the chaos.
The victims, who sustained severe injuries in the attack, were treated and discharged from the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman.
Videos circulating online show a violent confrontation at the premises of a local radio station, where it is alleged that Chairman Fawa instructed his supporters to beat up individuals at the station, accusing them of spreading false information about him on air.
According to local party members, the targets of the assault were individuals who had fallen out with Alhaji Nuhu Fawa, though the specific reasons for the fallout remain unclear. This dispute has sparked a media war between the two factions, further exacerbating the already high tensions following the removal of two constituency executives.
In a letter signed by constituency secretary Edward Fosu Nsowah, it was claimed that Fuseini Nafiu and Yussif Mohammed had acted in violation of party rules, engaging in “anti-party” behavior that went against the NDC’s principles.
In response to these developments, several branch executives and party supporters, wearing red armbands, gathered at the constituency office on Saturday, July 9, 2023, demanding the closure of the office. They accused the constituency chairman of illegal activities.
Following the incident, the Bono East Regional Police arrested Alhaji Nuhu Fawa, who was subsequently brought before the Techiman District Court on Monday, July 10, 2023. His plea was not taken, and his lawyer requested an out-of-court settlement, arguing that the matter was an internal party issue.
The trial judge granted the request for an out-of-court settlement, giving both parties a month to resolve their differences, with the help of party elders and opinion leaders.
