One Dead, Three Fugitives on the Run After Breakout at Techiman Nsuta Police Cells

One person has been reported dead and three Fulani herdsmen are on the run after breaking out of the Techiman Nsuta police cells in the Brong-Ahafo Region. The incident began when residents of Nsuta, a suburb of Techiman, were startled by the sound of gunfire coming from the police station.

When locals rushed to the scene, they discovered a lifeless body, believed to be that of a young Fulani man, behind the police station’s counter. They also found a frightened inmate and one police officer on duty. According to Joy News’ Brong-Ahafo correspondent, Anas Sabit, the police managed to shoot one of the escapees, who died at the scene.

The escape occurred when the police officer opened the cell to deliver a bucket of water to the inmates, as the cell’s toilet facility lacked a direct water source. Four inmates overpowered the officer and fled the scene. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the three remaining suspects, who are believed to be Fulani herdsmen.

Sabit reported that the body of the deceased has been taken to the Techiman Holy Family Hospital’s morgue for an autopsy. Superintendent George Afari Yeboah stated that the four escapees were due to be arraigned this week on charges of theft. Three of the fugitives had been on remand for allegedly stealing 17 cows in Yeji, while the fourth is accused of stealing 11 bunches of plantain.

Supt. Yeboah confirmed that information about the escapees has been shared with police stations both within and outside the region to aid in their re-arrest.
