How Okyeame Kwame betrayed Okyeame Qouphi

In a recent interview, Root Eye recounted an old incident suggesting that Okyeame Kwame once hinted that his former group member, Okyeame Quophi, was responsible for writing Ex-Doe’s Maba diss track aimed at Reggie Rockstone.

Speaking on PLUZZ FM, the Music Music host explained:

“In every family, people have their favorites. Between Okyeame Quophi and Okyeame Kwame, Kwame is my favorite even though we’re all family. I’ve stayed in both Quophi’s and Kwame’s homes, but Kwame is in my camp. Still, I think he was wrong to tell Reggie Rockstone that Quophi wrote the Maba diss track Ex-Doe later recorded. I haven’t spoken to either of them in a while, but when I do, I’ll tell Kwame he didn’t act rightly. That song was originally an Akyeame track planned by Quophi and Kwame as a response to Reggie’s claim that he was the ‘Oseikrom President,’ at a time when Akyeame were the biggest stars from Kumasi. The boys were too prominent in Oseikrom to accept Reggie taking that title. So they planned to write the song. Quophi wrote it – Akyeame were great songwriters – and Kwame contributed as well. I actually saw the song on Quophi’s computer.

“Ex-Doe had just created problems with Chicago after releasing Daavi Mede Kuku, and when the public found out the truth, he started losing support. His career was shaky, so he went to Kumasi to stay at Quophi’s house. That’s where he saw the unreleased diss track. Needing a strong comeback – especially after being slapped by someone at Labadi Beach over his earlier track – he took the lyrics from Quophi’s computer, returned to Accra, and recorded it as Maba. Akyeame had decided not to release the song themselves because they had built a good relationship with Reggie by then. So for Kwame to later tell Reggie that Quophi wrote it for Ex-Doe wasn’t right.

“Reggie is naturally charismatic. I always say we should never downplay his achievements, he was born a star, winning dance awards even before he became the rapper we know. When you meet him, you just like him, and I’m sure that charisma made Kwame say things he shouldn’t have. But Quophi also shouldn’t take it too personally. It’s all in the past, and we should leave it there.”
