President Akufo-Addo Commissions New Police Station in Techiman

During his three-day tour of the Brong Ahafo Region, President Nana Akufo-Addo officially commissioned a state-of-the-art police station in Techiman, the capital of the Techiman Municipality, which will serve as the Police Divisional Headquarters.

The facility includes offices for key units and officers, a waiting area, and separate cells for males and females. The project, which was awarded to the Techiman Municipal Assembly on February 23, 2016, faced cost overruns due to contractor-requested changes, with the final cost rising to GHc 706,143.38.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the police personnel to exhibit professionalism and dedication in their duties to ensure law and order in the country. He emphasized that maintaining peace is a shared responsibility, stating, “We are all police people and must help the police do their work.”

The President also addressed the increasing challenges of indiscipline, lawlessness, and armed robbery in the country, stressing the need for collaboration between the public and security agencies to combat these issues.

He also responded to critics, including former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who had criticized his campaign promise to create new regions from the Brong Ahafo Region. Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to the process, stating that all constitutional steps had been followed, and the report and recommendations were now awaited.

The President reiterated the government’s commitment to continuing social intervention programs, such as the Free SHS initiative, which will admit its second batch in September, the restoration of allowances for trainee nurses and teachers, and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), all aimed at reducing poverty.

On the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, the President encouraged the youth to get involved and announced that 15 percent of the program’s total investment will be allocated to the Brong Ahafo Region.

IGP David Asante-Apeatu commended the completion of the new police station, noting that it reflected the peaceful nature of the community and supported the government’s policy to strengthen the police service. He called for further collaboration between the police, local chiefs, and residents to maintain law and order.

The Paramount Chief of Techiman, Nana Oseadeayo Akumfi Ameyaw IV, appealed to the President for the creation of the Bono East Region, emphasizing the area’s resources and its potential to govern itself.

Earlier in the tour, the President engaged with chiefs in Nkoranza, laid the foundation for a new district hospital in Akonkonti (Nkoranza North), attended a durbar in Busunya, and commissioned a new district assembly block in Tuobodom for the Techiman North Assembly, wrapping up the first day of his tour.
