Eight Dead, Several Injured in Post-Election Violence; Police Intensify Investigations

A total of eight individuals, including three minors, lost their lives during the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The victims were Zakaria Samira, 12, Musah Fuseini, 14, Botwe Tackie, 16, Abdallah Ayarek, 18, Tajudeen Mohammed, 41, Dompreh Emmanuel, 36, and Abass Ibrahim, whose age was not specified.

In addition, approximately 15 other voters sustained injuries, mostly from gunshot wounds.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Isaac Ken Yeboah, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, provided these details at a press conference, updating the public on incidents of electoral violence.

COP Yeboah explained that the violence occurred in Tamale, Techiman, Odorkor, Ablekuma, and Savelugu, and most of the incidents took place after Election Day during the collation process.

He emphasized that the police would not protect anyone involved in inciting violence, and assured the public that investigations were ongoing to bring those responsible to justice. He called on citizens to assist the police with further inquiries.

Among those arrested was Duko Naa Mohammed Ahmed, the Chief of Duko in the Northern Region. A range of weapons and items were recovered during the operation, including a Beretta pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition, a Smith & Wesson pistol with nine rounds of ammunition, 80 additional rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun, pepper spray, BB cartridges, jack knives, an AK-47 rifle, a ballistic vest, G3 rifle ammunition, and two loaded magazines containing 60 rounds of ammunition.

COP Yeboah also mentioned that several suspects, including Geoffrey (alias Wadaada), Emmanuel Geo-Nai, Reverend Esinam Robert Oforfor, Mawuko, Bruno, and more than 30 others, had been charged with various offenses, including causing unlawful harm, unlawful damage, unlawful assembly, and murder.
