Minority Boycotts Vetting of Techiman South MP Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah Over Election Violence

The Minority members of Parliament’s Appointments Committee boycotted the vetting of Techiman South MP Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah on Friday, June 11, 2021. Korsah was being vetted for the role of Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development.

The boycott was sparked by the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s refusal to recognize Korsah as a legitimately elected MP. This stems from the violence surrounding the collation of results during the 2020 elections in the Techiman South constituency. The NDC has taken the matter to court, challenging the declaration of Korsah as the winner of the election.

The NDC accuses the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using violence to secure the seat and prevent the NDC from gaining a parliamentary majority. Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu criticized the government’s lack of action on the issue, stating that the seat was acquired through violence and the misuse of state security forces, resulting in the loss of lives.

“There has been no investigation, no visit from the Minister for Defence or the Minister for the Interior to offer condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, nor any compensation for these families,” Iddrisu added.
