Journalist Jamal Khashoggi murdered

Jamal Khashoggi, a former editor of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Watan newspaper and a Washington Post columnist, was killed soon after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he was trying to get papers for his upcoming marriage. He never came out, and his body has still not been found.

Khashoggi had moved to the U.S. in 2017 after a crackdown on critics in Saudi Arabia and began writing articles critical of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He had once advised the Saudi government but later spoke out against its actions, including the arrest of another journalist.

Turkish officials say they have audio proving Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate by a 15-member Saudi team sent to Istanbul. U.S. intelligence later concluded that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the operation after intercepts showed he wanted Khashoggi brought back to Saudi Arabia.
