Techiman South Protest to Pressure EC for Election Results Canceled Due to Lack of Police Support

A planned march to pressure the Electoral Commission (EC) to announce the results for the Techiman South parliamentary seat has been called off due to a shortage of police personnel.

The march, which aimed to demand the release of the delayed election results, was initially organized after alleged misconduct by some NDC supporters at the divisional police command, where the collation of results was taking place. Reports suggest that these supporters burned pink sheets and ballot papers, damaged EC materials, and even held journalists hostage. The chaos reportedly led to the incumbent MP seeking refuge in a washroom.

The demonstration was expected to attract many residents of Techiman, but the last-minute cancellation left many frustrated.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Adusei Poku, the Convener of the Concerned Youth of Techiman, explained, “We recently met with the Regional Police Command to discuss the security arrangements for the march. During that meeting, they expressed concerns about having enough officers available, especially with the increased demand for public safety during the holiday season.”

The date for rescheduling the protest remains uncertain.

The results for Techiman South are still in dispute, with both the NPP and NDC claiming victory. The EC has suggested a re-collation of the results to resolve the issue, a move that has been strongly opposed by the NDC.
