Techiman Drivers Criticize Fuel Price Reduction, Threaten to Raise Fares

Commercial drivers in Techiman, the Bono East regional capital, have criticized the recent 15 pesewa per litre reduction in fuel prices, calling it insufficient. Speaking to GBC News at the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) station, drivers warned that if the government does not make further reductions in fuel prices immediately, they will have no choice but to raise transport fares.
According to reports from Bono East Regional Correspondent Samuel Ayammah, fuel prices have soared in recent days, with diesel now priced between GHC 10 and GHC 11 per litre, and petrol exceeding GHC 9 at some stations. This has led to a rise in the cost of living, with petroleum and food prices being identified as the primary contributors to inflation, as noted in a recent Ghana Statistical Service report.
In an interview with GBC News, Mr. Manu Asamoah, Vice Chairman of PROTOA in Techiman, acknowledged that the fuel price hike is negatively impacting their operations. However, he emphasized that they cannot unilaterally increase transport fares.
Mr. George Amoah, Treasurer of PROTOA, called on the government to remove taxes on petroleum products, revitalize the Tema Oil Refinery, and restore all the country’s defunct tyre manufacturing plants.
Driver Mr. Kwame Wiredu also appealed for a reduction in fuel prices to help drivers stay in business, while Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, another driver, lamented the long-standing neglect of the welfare of both farmers and drivers by successive governments.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, had earlier announced that fuel prices would be reduced by 15 pesewas, effective April 1, 2022.
