Techiman Residents Accuse Mahama Administration of Diverting Road Project Funds

Residents of Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region are accusing officials from the Mahama administration of diverting funds intended for a local road project, and they are demanding an immediate investigation. The residents claim that the diversion has left them with poor road infrastructure, negatively affecting their daily lives.

Nana Appenteng Fosu Gyeabour II, the Ninsoahene, and the Bamahene of the Techiman Traditional Council, expressed confusion and frustration over the project’s diversion, saying they were not informed or consulted when the road project, initially planned for their area, was redirected elsewhere.

The accusations stem from a recent visit by the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), which revealed that six years ago, a road project meant for Techiman, funded partly by oil revenue, was diverted to another location. The project, worth ¢17 million, was intended to improve roads in the Hansua community, but residents claim that not a single access road was built in their area.

The residents of Hansua, Brigade, and Jamestown, all suburbs of Techiman, have expressed their frustration over the deteriorating state of their roads. They say it is especially dangerous during the rainy season, when the roads become nearly impassable. One resident mentioned that drivers often refuse to drive into the area due to the poor road conditions, making it difficult for people to get home when it rains. Additionally, overflowing gutters and flooding present a serious hazard, particularly for children and adults alike.

The community members are calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged diversion of the funds and insist that the promised roads were never constructed in their designated areas. They are demanding accountability for the funds that were allocated to their communities but not used as intended.
