Techiman Market Building Collapses, One Dead and others Injured

A two-storey market building under construction at Techiman Market collapsed at dawn yesterday, resulting in the death of an unidentified person.

Another individual, 48-year-old watchman Adamu Alhassan, narrowly escaped but sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Techiman Holy Family Hospital.

The Techiman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Twumasi Ankrah, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic and stated that the body of the deceased has been taken to the hospital for autopsy.

An eyewitness, Richard Agyapong, reported that the deceased had visited Alhassan, who was in charge of the building materials. When Alhassan sensed that the structure was about to collapse, he fled without warning the visitor.

Agyapong noted that it took the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) some time to remove the deceased from the rubble. He also expressed concern that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant authorities had not yet investigated whether others might still be trapped in the collapsed building, as many people were reportedly using the incomplete structure for shelter.
