WAEC Withholds Results of Over 500 Techiman SHS Candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of over five hundred candidates from the Techiman Senior High School in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Citi News’ correspondent in the region reported that although the school was not implicated in any of the categories of schools found to have engaged in exam malpractice, the school authorities have stated that the results are being withheld for further review.

This has left the affected candidates in a state of uncertainty, as they anxiously await news of when their results will be released and what the outcome will be.

Several candidates who spoke with Citi News expressed frustration over the situation. One candidate explained: “This situation has put me through quite a lot. The institutions that we applied for gave us a deadline and the deadline has come and gone. Right now we don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do. I’m just holding on.”

Another candidate shared: “I applied to schools, stating clearly that I’m awaiting forms with the WASSCE 2016 results. I have no option but to wait for next year.”

A parent of one of the affected candidates expressed her concerns, urging WAEC to take immediate action to resolve the issue. “We don’t know what they want us to do. I think they want our children to stay in the house. At the end of the term or the year, they can’t go anywhere…,” she said.

The Headmaster of Techiman Senior High School, Jacob Afor, responded by explaining that they had been in contact with WAEC, who confirmed that the results of some schools, including theirs, are being scrutinized. “We were not cited for exam malpractice. We don’t know of anything nasty that occurred during the exams that will call for such scrutiny, but they are stakeholders so we are just crossing our fingers and waiting,” he added.

Over 1,576 candidates had some of their subjects cancelled this year, while 598 had their entire results cancelled. Additionally, the results of candidates from 85 schools have been withheld as investigations into alleged mass cheating continue.
