Samini Shares the Unexpected Inspiration Behind His Hit Song “Gyae Shi”

Ghanaian musician Samini, the first artiste from the country to win the prestigious MOBO Award, has opened up about what inspired his hit track “Gyae Shi.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Abeiku Santana on UTV’s Atuu, Samini—known privately as Emmanuel Andrew Samini—reflected on his career, his contributions to the industry, and his influence on other artistes.

During the conversation, Abeiku Santana asked what motivated him to create “Gyae Shi,” which translates as “Stop Smoking.” Samini explained that he wrote the song when he was very young after an experience where he mixed wee with akpeteshie one hot afternoon and concluded that the local gin was “better” than the substance.

“It’s a long story. I was very young then, and I remember blending the two that particular afternoon—that was the experience that inspired the song,” he admitted.
