NDC Supporters in Techiman Threaten Protest Over Leadership disputes

Some dissatisfied supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Techiman constituency have threatened to stage a protest against the party leadership in the municipality. They have given the national leadership of the NDC a one-month ultimatum to resolve an ongoing dispute between the Techiman Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Philip Oppong Amponsah, and the two NDC Members of Parliament (MPs) in the region.

The supporters argue that the prolonged conflict between Mr. Adjei Mensah, MP for Techiman South, Mr. Alex Kyeremeh, MP for Techiman North, and the MCE could negatively impact the NDC’s prospects in the 2016 elections if the issue is not addressed swiftly.

They further claimed that the NDC in the municipality has become divided into two factions—one supporting the northern constituency and the other supporting the southern constituency—resulting in a lack of unity among party members in the area.

Mr. Kwadwo Adjei, a prominent NDC member in the Brong-Ahafo Region and spokesman for the aggrieved supporters, shared with journalists in Techiman that this division has also spread to the constituency executives. He stated that the strained relationship among the three key figures has fostered factionalism, creating unnecessary tension within the party.

“We cannot stand by and allow the personal interests of these individuals to undermine our chances in the 2016 general election,” Mr. Adjei said.

He explained that efforts made by influential personalities in the municipality to mediate the situation had not been successful, and called for the national executive of the NDC to step in.

“What concerns us is the ongoing public exchange of insults on the airwaves,” Mr. Adjei, a businessman, added. He emphasized that retaining power in the 2016 elections would not be easy for the NDC, and urged party members and supporters to focus on engaging the grassroots and intensifying their campaigns, rather than getting bogged down in internal disputes.

Mr. Adjei also pointed out that the youth are a key strength of the NDC and stressed the importance of the party’s leadership in properly supporting and motivating the grassroots to ensure the party’s success.
