GNFS Begins Seizure of Mini Coal Pots to Curb Market Fires in Techiman

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Techiman district has begun seizing mini coal pots commonly used to brew local tea beverages, especially ataaya, within market centers.
This action comes in response to a rising number of fire incidents in markets across the country. The Techiman district has recorded two major fires in its central market, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to eliminate potential fire risks.
These incidents add to a nationwide trend of destructive market fires. Earlier, on January 1, 2025, a massive blaze swept through Accra’s Kantamanto Market – one of West Africa’s biggest hubs for second-hand clothing – destroying thousands of stalls, displacing nearly 8,000 traders, and causing financial losses amounting to millions of cedis.
